Did you know?

ArcGIS on-line

I hadn’t heard about ArcGIS being made available as an on-line platform. From what I can gather this is a relatively new development. What is potentially very interesting for mappers is the introduction of a free personal account. Find out more from here .

Kindle tips & tricks

Judging by the responses from the survey – more on that in a future edition – quite a few of you already have or are considering purchasing a Kindle. One of the frustrating things I find with Kindles is that although you CAN read pdfs on them they get displayed as pdfs and not in the kindle format, and there fore not size adjustable. Yes you can zoom in but that’s not without its problems. Apparently you can convert pdfs to Kindle format according to this blog post and do a host of other potential exciting things.

Open Access

This seems to be a running theme recently so I’ll mention open access matters and the Elsevier boycott movement. For those of you who have or are considering joining the boycott here’s a guide from SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) on what happens next: You’ve joined the boycott now what?

Lastly, the cost of science.

The total budget for NASA’s lifetime (that’s more than 50 years) is less than the amount spent by the US government bailing out banks?

Update on The Men in Lycra- did they get there?

Last time a Library News was prepared we were following the heroic efforts of  Tom Bishop & Laurence Pryer (and some other equally plucky chaps) in their quest to travel from London to Paris in 24 hours, on bicycles and raise money for charity in the process. Not wanting to make the task too easy for themselves they were fortunate enough to ride during a 24 hour period which gave them combinations of rain, hail, thunder and a headwind for most of the journey while in France. You can still follow their progress reports on Twitter @LtP241 or see pictures on men of the verge of total breakdown on their blog Oh, and they got there in 23 hours and 31 minutes. Bravo chaps.
