Current Earth Sciences Library News, No. 512, the 6 week left of term edition

Pleased as punch news

I am delighted to share the news that Laurence Cowton was awarded first prize in Neftex’s Earth Model Award 2013 for best project in Msc/Msci/MGeol  for 2012-2013. Neftex will also attend the highly anticipated Careers Event later on this term. Details below.

Interviewed by the Guardian News

Javier Ortega-Hernández was interviewed by the Guardian last month about his paper in Biology Letters on how “Fossil hunters have unearthed the remains of the first known creature to curl up in a little ball, and so pioneer one of the most successful defensive strategies of life on Earth.”

Publishing News

An interesting couple of papers here, this one in the Economist about the amount of fraud in scientific plushing in China. The second article in Science called ‘Who’s afraid of peer review‘is a sting operation in which ‘A spoof paper concocted by Science reveals little or no scrutiny at many open-access journals.

Careers updates news

Makes sure you keep a date in your diaries for the Careers Event, Wednesday 13th November, between 5.00 and 7.00 p.m. ( 17.00-19.00), where there will be lots of this:

and more of this too:

Meanwhile the Careers Service  has started it’s Michaelmas series of Briefings, dates for the next few are on their web site or from our Careers page in Events & Calendar. For instance you’ll find detailsof the upcoming BP luncheon.

A career in government sounds exciting, and here we have graduate Briony Bowe attending a Parliamentary Committee Hearing, sitting behind the Minister she is there to brief if need be: 460×322 . Warning, this is quite long and very dull (Briony has given me permission to say this).

Art Show News

To  commemorate the 10th Annual Earth Sciences Art a lovely book has been produced.Scan of art show book cover Come and browse through it in the library. It’s lovely.

Could this be useful?

And finally, librarian meets geology news…

Librarian meets geology

I was taken to Ketton last week for a first ever field trip and had a wonderfull time. Although not sure it was absolutely necessary for Liz Harper to make me eat the mud (or ‘rock’ as she liked to call it). Twice.
