Ooooh, Controversial

From the Guardian: Reasons we should ditch university lectures. Students have just one chance to hear a lecture – and mostly it’s just someone reading their notes aloud … Read on

Staff in the media news

Don’t miss another chance to catch The Core, no not that film, but Horizon’s episode of the same name featuring Arwen Deuss. Worth watching even without the travel to the centre of the Earth, available on the iPlayer until Monday (if I’ve counted the days right, and you’re reading this on Friday)

Let’s make the ‘attic’ scientifically attractive news

Julia Gottschalk  came up with an idea for making the cabinets on the third floor corridors more interesting. She suggested using old conference posters on the doors, hung in such a way that the material in the cabinets would still be easily accessible. Here’s our trial (Sorry. I’m not sure that picture is helping sell the concept here). We’ve calculated there’s room for about 33 posters,  if you have a poster rolled up in a corner of their office that they would be happy to see on display, please get in touch.

Pint of Science news

Hurrah, all the talks have sold out so, if you’ve bought tickets remember the talks are on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday 19th-21st of May. Go Team Earth Sciences: Ellie Jennings, Eric Wolff & Alex Maske. I’m not sure if you can just turn up on the day and get in but if you’re really interested it may be worth a try.

A message about the football world cup & something for tonight’s happy hour

This year is a huge year for football and we’d like to get everyone keen with a little emotional investment. If you’re looking for a team to cheer on and a chance at a cash prize, please come along tonight to Happy Hour to draw a team out of the hat (or fez in this case)! I appreciate this is short notice but if you can’t make it, drop me an email (co323) and I’ll draw you a team. There are ONLY(!) 32 teams and I’m obviously expecting demand to far exceed this… But anyway if there are teams left over, we can draw them first come first served over the next few days if you let me know.
Entry will be £2 which means a whopping £50 Grand prize for the winner, £10 for second place and £4 for third. Booby prizes will also go to whichever team performs the worst, and whichever team knocks England out (if any, am I right??)
Talk to ,   or   for more info!
