Current Earth Sciences Library News, No. 529, the Vogue edition

It’s like being on the cover of Vogue but for science geeks

Congratulations to James Bryson, Claire Nichols & Richard Harrison on getting the front cover of this week’s Nature, and all the media coverage that came with it.

Including front page on the University web site, and though I’m reluctant to give them the publicity it has to be mentioned that even the Daily Mail featured it – the comments make it worth a trip I have to say. The highlight for me being Simon Redfern’s skilful insertion of the term ‘tiny space magnets’ into a BBC News piece, well played sir.

The university has signed up to an institutional account with Altmetric. “Every day, thousands of scholarly papers are being discovered, discussed and shared. Altmetric tracks what people are saying about papers online on behalf of publishers, authors, libraries and institutions” You can explore and sign up to see what it’s about here.

I thought the Nature paper would be a good one to test the system/tool with, so I created a custome group with just that paper and it’s brought out some interesting stuff. The image below gives a quick summary of the social media activity that’s been generated from the paper. Interesting to contrast with the results from a google news search

This is nice, from the BBC The 25 Biggest Turning Points in Earth’s History

The library will be closed on Monday 26th January, but key holders will be able to come and go as per usual.
