News from Computer Office

Windows 7 Upgrade

As previously announced Windows XP and MS Office 2003 will not be used at the University due to their end of support. We have moved the almost all of department-owned PCs to Windows 7 (with Office 2010/2013) and there are a handful of user-owned PCs with Windows XP left. The owners of these PCs will be contacted by Computer Office in the next term.

New Teaching PCs

10 new PCs will be available in Part II Lab (S322) and Part 1B Lab (S213), for mainly teaching activities. They all have Windows 7 and Office 2010 installed.
Please refer to this page for other department computing resources.

Department Mail Archive

We have established a new e-mail archive for the department users. This page describes how to use the facility.

New Home Sites

The home/group site (micro site) server has been renewed and now we offer a more user-friendly content management system for the site construction and management. Read on…

Publications Databases (ePrints)

The upgrade to the latest version of ePrints has been completed. The new version can handle the requirements for forthcoming REF2014. The new databases are available here:

Department VPN Pilot

We have implemented a test VPN (Virtual Private Network) facility and will organise a pilot with selected users. Once this is implemented, it will replace now slightly out-of-date CamVPDN. If you are interested in participating the pilot, please contact the Computer Office.

New Web Site

As you may be aware, the University launched a new-look web site and the department site will follow the same/similar design and architecture in the next school year. The project has been started and we are currently discussing the technical feasibility and the design.

ESC IT Committee

The committee meets every term to discuss all computing matters in the department. See this page for the members of the committee.

If you have any computing issue, please contact Computer Office or your representative.

A guide to Twitter

For those of you thinking about joining Twitter, here’s a handy guide from our chums over at Geology for Global Development

Mary Anning?

The Guardian recently posted a blog post containing an image that may possibly be of Mary Anning, read on to see the image and find out a little bit more about women’s role in early geology.
